Maybe you know of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), where people challenge themselves to write 50 000 words in 30 days, starting 1st November. Well, I present to you ThesisWriMo, my own attempt at getting myself to write something (anything!) because hey, my PhD funding runs out in October, and my supervisors want to see a draft before the new academic year starts, and they're going on holiday at various points in summer, etc. etc. Scroll down for the rules (I can impose my own rules, no one says I can't), and progress updates... The Rules:
Status Update 19/07/19 (day 30): 52 351 / 59 339. It's 2pm 19th July (more or less - I'm hungry and taking a break for lunch). I have lost! Not too bad for my first attempt at ThesisWriMo (or any kind of WriMo). Here are some vital stats:
Status Update 18/07/19 (day 29.5): 48 509 / 59 339. 39 170 words, 1328 per day. I'm staying with my friend in Brighton at the moment. She's part of the team at Balefire Blades, so there's been some very casual polishing of swords happening while I write in her living room. I don't think I'm writing 10 830 words before 2pm tomorrow. Oh well. :-) Status Update 16/07/19 (day 27.5): 44 133 / 59 339. 34 794 words, 1265 per day. Clawing it back. Can I just say, that's nearly 4000 words since yesterday. Most of them were copied from something else I'd already written, but hey... Status Update 15/07/19 (day 26): 40 385 / 59 339. 31 046 words, 1194 per day. Watch my average decline! It's been a really good weekend though. The draft of Chapter 2 is done now - just 5 more to go... Status Update 12/07/19 (day 23.5): 37 985 / 59 339. 28 646 words, 1219 per day. I was at the 4th annual CDT ESA conference for 2.5 days, give me a break! I'm going to have to average 3285 words a day for the next week if I want to win. I don't think that's happening... Status Update 05/07/19 (day 16): 34 628 / 59 339. 25 289 words, 1580 per day. Btw most of these words aren't even real text. Here's a breakdown: Chapter 1 (nearly finished): 18 127 Chapter 2 (nearly nearly finished): 8 821 References: 2 785 That's another 4 895 words of filler and junk! So now you know. Status Update 02/07/19 (day 13.5): 30 372 / 59 339. 21 033 words, 1558 per day... I need to take a break to do some reading and graphing, so don't expect much to happen to the word count for the next day or two... Status Update 01/07/19 (day 12.5): 28 965 / 59 339. 19 626 words now, or 1570 per day... I'm doing some flow diagrams and in doing so have realised I need to correct some mistakes in my code. Awkward. (I don't think it'll change the results much.) Status Update 30/06/19 (day 11): 26 355 / 59 339. 17 016 words now, or 1547 words per day! Status Update 28/06/19 (day 9): 23 029 / 59 339. The LaTeX compiling problem is solved! All I needed was to use \bibliographystyle{apa} rather than {apalike}... I can't even remember why I wanted {apalike} in the first place... Anyway, that's 13 690 words in 9 days, or 1521 words per day. Starting to get back on track... I'm going to see my parents this weekend. Have a good one, folks. Status Update 26/06/19 (day 7.5): 15 526 / 59 339. Camping was awesome. I am back and struggling to compile my LaTeX file, which is awkward. It'll do it if I specify [numbers] for \usepackage[numbers]{natbib} but then all my citations are just numbers. I want them in (author, year) form - but I keep getting "Package natbib Error: Bibliography not compatible with author-year citations." and I don't know why! All my references have authors and years! So that's where I am. 6187 words in 7.5 days. A lot of catching up to do! Status Update 20/06/19 (day 1.5): 12 317 / 59 339. I'm going camping this weekend so I've been trying to write 3 days' worth in 1 - it's not really worked! In answer to people's questions:
Status Update 19/06/19 (day 0):
9 339 / 59 339.
