A few times this month, I've heard people bring up the environmental impact of christmas cards. (No, I have nothing against receiving christmas cards, but sorry, I'm not really in the habit of sending them out myself).
I'd guess that the impact of one card is small - but what do I really know? How much of the carbon emissions come from the cards' manufacture vs. its delivery through the post? And how does it compare with other christmassy activities? To make a start on answering these questions, we need the techniques of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). To illustrate the procedure:
