As promised, a few thoughts on the BEIS Industrial Strategy green paper – the full document is rather long, but even if you don’t read the whole thing there may be a chapter or two you can weigh in on. They’re collecting responses until April. I’ve not got mine sorted out yet – I’m writing this mostly to sift through my thoughts. Maybe it can help you too. It is going to be slightly disjointed. You have been warned. Contents:
1. The whole document is obsessed with growth and productivity 2. The madness of university laboratory procurement 3. ‘Developing Skills’ (p.37-49) - a) Why are we so bad at training people? b) Does management in this country have a problem with delegating? c) Why is the UK so classist? d) Why is careers advice in schools so bad? e) Do you expect these new ‘Institutes of Technology’ to do any better than the old polytechnics? f) Do all of the above have the same basic answer? 4. There is an under-supply of patient capital 5. a) They go on about improving transport, and not at all about reducing the need for transport b) Improving transport will only mean more people commute to London from further away c) They mention housing, but nothing about carbon standards or workmanship 6. a) We are so NOT meeting our targets b) Circular economy? Hello? c) Make it easier for people to start/join wind/solar cooperatives d) Battery technology research institute! 7. If the Northern Powerhouse and Midlands Engine don’t take off… 8. "synthetic biology quantum technologies" Conclusions |
